General Society of the War of 1812

Texas Society Founded in 1959

Welcome to the General Society of the War of 1812 in Texas webpages. We sincerely appreciate you seeking us out to see what we are all about. We are a patriotic lineage society whose members can trace their ancestors back to those brave men and women who fought for and supported America’s Independence a second time in the War of 1812. Our ancestors lived during extraordinary times and in their lifetimes, did some extraordinary things – for a second time for a few of them. The deeds that they did and the sacrifices that they made, gave America its final independence and our families the lives that we now experience and enjoy.

Today, we also live in extraordinary times – times like we have never seen in our lifetimes with new challenges every day. I am so proud of our Texas Society members for their many accomplishments and successes over the past years. Our society actively supports and recognizes our veterans, supports scholastic contests and scholarship awards for our youth, recognizes young leaders in JROTC/ROTC, honor guards for many patriotic ceremonies for our 1812 ancestors. As you can see, we are an active and diverse society and of course, always looking for new members. Please check out our website and contact us today using one of the many handy submission forms. Once again, thank you so much for visting our website and we look forward to meeting you in person very soon!

For any questions that you may have, please contact the Chapter President or Registrar of the chapter closest to you. Once again, thank you so much for visting our website and we look forward to meeting you in person very soon!

About GSW1812

Founded September 14, 1814

The General Society of the War of 1812 is one of the earliest  lineage societies ever formed. Originally, it was founded on September 14, 1814 and traces it origins to the huge collection of American militia companies that were called upon to repel the Britsh thrust near Baltimore following the Britsh occupation of the new nations’ capital in Washington D.C.

About the War of 1812

The Second War of Independence

The War of 1812 is sometimes referred to as the “Second War of Independence”.  This was the first large scale test of the new American republic on the world stage in the early 19th century. With the British Navy impressing American sailors and the British government aiding Native American tribes in their attacks on American citizens on the frontier, Congress declared war on a foreign nation for the first time in our nation’s history.  Many battles raged on the high seas, while British soldiers invaded American soil, captured Washington D.C., and even burned the White House. In the end, the Star-Spangled Banner waved “O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
